Oldendorf, one of the most distinguished surface warfare flag officers to serve during World War II. She was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi beginning December 27, 1974. Was Launched on October 21, 1975 and was commissioned on March 4, 1978.

One of nine Leahy-class "double-ended" guided missile destroyers. I served while RKT was undergoing an extensive baseline overhaul at Charleston Naval Shipyard, Charleston, SC from January to December 1982. During this overhaul TURNER received numerous updates to modernize her combat systems suite. She was also fitted with the Vulcan Phalanx Close In Weapons System (CIWS) for self defense against cruise missiles.
